FAQ-004

Q. How to recover a corrupted IDE RAID 1?

Answer

A corrupted IDE RAID 1 could occur when the server is not properly shut down. In such a case, you may experience some of the following symptoms.

  • The disk array becomes non-bootable.
  • The server performance becomes extremely sluggish.
  • Windows logs a large number of controller error / time-out events.

A corrupted IDE RAID 1 does not necessary mean corrupted data. Take the following steps to determine if the array is recoverable.

  • Power off and disconnect both drives from the Adaptec 1200A controller
  • Connect drive 1 directly to the SBC
  • Power on. The drive can be used to rebuild the array if the system boots successfully
  • If drive 1 does not boot, connect drive 2 to the SBC and repeat the above step

To rebuild the array:

  • Destroy the Mirroring Relationship
  • Reconnect the drive containing good data to IDE 1 of the 1200A controller
  • Reconnect the other drive to IDE 2
  • Make sure drive 1 is set to bootable in the Adaptec BIOS
  • Continue to Boot o Windows
  • Delete the partition on drive 2 if necessary
  • Use the Adaptec Array Management application to rebuid the array
